The George Halas Trophy is presented to the champions of the National Football Conference.  Some of the teams that have the chance of winning it are the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, and Minnesota Vikings.

George Halas was a professional football player, coach and owner, who died from pancreatic cancer in October 1983.

Favre who currently dons a purple Minnesota Vikings jersey will be lining up against his former team, whom he played 16 seasons with, the Green Bay Packers. He will basically be taking on all of his former players besides one to show that he can make it with yet another team. It won’t be an easy task though considering Green Bay has a prevailing record of 5-1.

Lafayette College Player Earns Football Award

Lafayette Football Awards

Due to Lafayette’s 20-17 overtime win vs. Penn, Junior kicker David Rodriguez and junior linebacker Michael Schmidlein both earned Patriot League honors. Rodriguez was named Special Teams player of the Week while Schmidlein received Defensive Player of the Week honors.

While it was a first conference award for Schmidlein, it was a career thirs for Rodriguez who is 70-0f-74 on PAT’s and 23-of-35 on FG attempts.

The Captains accept the Transit Trophy

Rensselaer Wins the Transit Trophy 42-33On a day when the Rensselaer offense produced 288 rushing yards and six total touchdowns, it was the RPI defense that sealed the win, forcing two interceptions, a punt and a turnover on downs on WPI’s four 4th quarter drives as visiting RPI held on for a 42-33 victory in the Liberty League opener for both teams. The win gives RPI (3-0, 1-0 Liberty League) a 55-43-5 edge in the overall series between the two long-time rivals, and makes sure the coveted Transit Trophy, awarded annually to the WPI-RPI winner, remains in Troy for the 13th consecutive year.

Susquehanna (2–0) retains possession of the “Goal Post” trophy with this rivalry win over Juniata (0-2) in the 50th all “Goal Post Game.” The trophy is an actual piece of goal post taken from Susquehanna’s old University Field by Juniata fans following their team’s upset of the Crusaders in 1952. SU is now 26–23–1 all-time in Goal Post games.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy

The National Football League’s iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy, awarded each season to the Super Bowl champions, was originally called the World Championship Game Trophy. The trophy’s design began as a sketch on a cocktail napkin in 1966 by Oscar Riedner, vice president of design for the Tiffany & Co. jewelry company. Mr. Riedner’s sketch, developed during a luncheon with NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, featured a regulation-size football in kicking position on an elongated tee. Aside from updating the NFL’s logo, the trophy design has remained unchanged since its original drawing. Requiring approximately four months and 72 hours of labor to complete, each Lombardi Trophy is hand-spun, assembled and engraved at Tiffany & Co.’s workshop in Parsippany, N.J. The seven-pound, 22-inch-tall trophies are cast entirely of sterling silver and valued at more than $25,000 each. The NFL renamed the World Championship Game Trophy in 1970 to honor legendary Green Bay Packers head coach — and winner of Super Bowls I and II — Vince Lombardi. The Lombardi Trophy is presented to the Super Bowl champions during an on-field ceremony immediately following the game. After the presentation, the trophy is sent back to Tiffany & Co. to be engraved with the date and final score of the game, as well as the winning team’s roster. A new trophy is created each year!!!
