The last time it was on campus, Robert Witt was not yet president of the University of Alabama.
Mike Price was in the midst of his brief stint as coach of the Crimson Tide football team.
Saddam Hussein was still leader of Iraq. Barack Obama was a member of the Illinois state senate.
And Nick Saban had yet to win a national championship with his former team, the LSU Tigers.
After a six-year stay in Auburn, the trophy that goes to the victor of the Iron Bowl will return to Tuscaloosa today.
‘It’s been awhile,’ said Carl Bacon, director of the Ferguson Center, where the trophy is displayed. ‘I remember when they took it away and I said, ‘Be sure to wrap it up and take good care of it because it’ll be back next year.’ ‘
Not quite. After Auburn upset Alabama in the 2002 game in Tuscaloosa, hard times fell on the Crimson Tide while a steady hand at Auburn — then-coach Tommy Tuberville — led the Tigers on their longest winning streak in the series.
But at halftime of the two schools’ basketball game tonight at Coleman Coliseum, the James E. Foy Omicron Delta Kappa Sportsmanship Trophy will be formally presented to UA by an Auburn contingent.
Commonly called the Foy Trophy or the Foy ODK Trophy, it was cast by the two campus’ chapters of ODK, an honor society. The trophy is still owned and cared for by ODK members.
‘That trophy has a lot of history and a lot of pride in it,’ said Dale Coleman, Auburn professor and adviser to its ODK chapter. Read more »

And the public will be able to see it starting Saturday, January 24 at 10 a.m.
Usually, the trophy can only be seen at the team offices.

No Clear Favorite for Silver Football
The season has yet to be completed. The majority of votes have yet to be cast.
And yet it feels as if the Silver Football trophy, awarded each year by the Tribune to the Big Ten’s best player, already has changed hands several times.
The preseason pick was Ohio State’s Chris “Beanie” Wells. But a foot injury ruined his September and cleared a path for Michigan State’s Javon Ringer, whose 198-yard output at Indiana in the Big Ten opener was trumped only by his astounding workload (44 carries).
As Ringer lost feeling in his legs, Penn State’s Daryll Clark emerged as the league’s best quarterback. Sure, he would throw for as many yards in a game as your favorite Big 12 signal-caller did in a quarter, but Clark was efficient, reliable and made terrific decisions.
Then came Nov. 8. Old Man Winter came to Iowa City and delivered a cold-blooded shot to Clark’s gut. Clark threw a fourth-quarter interception that sparked Iowa’s game-winning field-goal drive.
But the band played on after the Nittany Lions‘ loss. Greene Day rocked Kinnick Stadium. Iowa’s Shonn Greene rushed for 117 yards and two scores against Penn State, giving him MVP momentum in the season’s final weeks.
So let’s look at the four top candidates (in alphabetical order):
Daryll Clark
Hand him the trophy: MVP of the league’s best team. Has thrown just four interceptions in 259 attempts.
Not so fast: One week after suffering a concussion at Ohio State, he played in a daze, completing just 9 of 23 passes at Iowa.
Talking point: “You just felt like he was in total control.”—Indiana coach Bill Lynch after Clark led Penn State to a 34-7 victory over the Hoosiers. Read more »
